Microsoft’s Bing, with its integration of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, has become quite popular. Now, Google has officially started their Bard AI in a limited preview. This current wave of generative AI is currently only available in the US and UK, but it is expected to roll out worldwide soon, in a limited preview. In this article, we will share how you can get started with it and how you can use it. So, without further ado, let’s take a closer look.

What is Bard?

Let’s start with its name, Bard, which comes from William Shakespeare, a known good storyteller. The underlying technology is known as LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications). This has been tested internally by Google developers since 2017 and has been extensively polished in recent years. This makes your research more productive, as it can take you far beyond Google Search by providing context-specific responses.

How useful is the Google Bar?

Before proceeding, this is a generational AI built on the LaMDA model introduced back in 2021, which is used to create new content based on prompts. Google said it’s trained on large language models and can be used to generate text with different kinds of creative content and answer questions in an informative way.

We now have a lot of use-case scenarios, especially after the introduction of Microsoft’s Bing GPT to millions of users every single day. You can use it to find answers to better understand a topic in natural language with ease. As of now, it looks quite balanced, but there is still plenty of room to catch up with Microsoft’s Bing AI. However, Google currently only offers limited access. As far as we can see, Google has a very well-designed ranking system for websites compared to Bing, so you can expect it to get better and better over time.

Google’s Bard output is a bit more concise and structured compared to Bing’s and ChatGPT results. Even though it seems a bit faster and shorter, what makes it different from Bing’s Generative AI is that it also prepares a different version of the output, which you can check by clicking on the “View other drafts” option. While on Bing, you need to tap on “recreate” or “try again” on ChatGPT. At this point, it is not intended to replace traditional search, but it is quite impressive how it can gather all the information together in a very short period.

At this point, there isn’t anything groundbreaking, as ChatGPT can do the same. It could have been really impressive if it had been released a month ago or before the introduction of Microsoft’s Bing AI. Google Bard also makes a lot of mistakes and is not up to our expectations. Google Bard doesn’t seem to be noticeably better than the competition. Like Bing’s predictive AI, Google Bard also fails or gets errors, especially with numbers and figures.

There are plenty of areas that go against common sense, which is quite common for all generative AI, and it still shows how bad Google Bard is. It also lacks sources for the information, whereas Bing cites the sites from where it is gathering the information, whereas Google does have this feature, but it only shows sometimes. You can’t even ask Google Bard to show more information and follow-up questions, which we can only hope Google can fix during this preview period. The company is constantly telling you that it’s not ready yet and that the information won’t always be correct.

It also holds sensitive topics that you may ask about, like medication or weight loss, or sources or talk beyond the snippet about specific people. This is sideloaded from the company’s offering at this stage. It just works on a web page. Google is trying to be more responsible, or maybe Google isn’t completely ready yet! But yes, it’s not better than Microsoft’s Bing’s predictive AI.

How to Sign Up for Google Bard

As Google launched Bard for a limited preview, the company is also looking to integrate it with Workspace. They are gathering feedback from their first users and focusing on quality and safety by eliminating misuse and spam and building guardrails through training and general trial and error.
