Apple recently released its latest Apple iOS 14.5. This update brings some major changes. Unlike the previous update, this update has become controversial in recent times because Apple includes one of the most important privacy features, known as ATT. ATT stands for App Tracking Transparency; this was announced last year, and iOS 14.5 was finally released.

About iOS 14.5 new privacy feature

This ATT feature allows you to block applications used to track your online activities from other companies and websites. After updating to iOS 14.5, ATT will start in action and will show a pop-up form where you need to choose if you want the app to track you or not from the app that is used to track your online activities.

How the ATT feature works

There, you will get two different options in the ATT pop-up box. Here you go.

  • Ask the app not to track
    • With this feature, apps will not have any permission to collect your data. Here, apps will not be able to track what you are buying or other activities. This means they will not be able to target your personalized ads.
  • Allow
    • This will not change anything, and the app will continue tracking your online activities as before, which might include age, location, health information, spending habits, browsing history, and many more. This information will be sold to advertisers and data brokers. After this, your data is used to track your personalized ads on websites and apps.

Why can’t you see app tracking pop-ups?

According to Apple, whenever you open any application after downloading and installing the iOS 14 update on your iPhone, there will be an option that asks you permission to “Allow tracking your activities across other companies’ apps and websites.” Currently, a lot of applications are not familiar with this functionality. This is why most of the apps, like Instagram and Facebook, don’t show you any pop-ups. They have not included this feature in their application yet.

How do I enable the app tracking pop-up?

You can also install iOS 14.5.1, but it is currently rolling out. However, you can still use this feature if you have iOS 14.5. Here are the following step-by-step instructions mentioned below:

  • Open Device Settings, and then head over to Privacy.
  • Click on Tracking.
  • Next, toggle to enable the ATT “Allow apps to Require Tracking.”
  • That’s it

This feature seems to be very happy, but the social media giant wasn’t happy about this “Mark Zuckerberg.”

Why is Facebook unhappy?

According to reports, 80% of users will not allow the app to track their online activities and enable ATT. Meanwhile, which is likely to make a huge impact on its business model where they say they use the service to show more personalized ads, Support Small Business relies on ads to reach an audience and helps keep their social media free of charge. On the other hand, Facebook published a full-page ad on NewSpade criticizing the app tracking service. They say a business might need to take subscriptions and offer in-app payments for revenue.

Why has Apple done this now?

From the beginning, Apple primarily stands for a privacy-centric company, and its revenue is based on in-app purchases and selling devices instead of advertisements. We hope Google will also bring this to Android smartphones.
