Windows 11 has officially announced a new feature in Windows 11 Insider Canary Build 25921: HDR background support. The process of using HDR wallpaper is quite similar to applying standard JPEG wallpaper on Windows 11. All you need to do before applying HDR wallpaper is enable the HDR feature on the device.

How to Apply HDR (JXR) Wallpaper on Windows 11

Note: This feature is still in beta, and while using it, you may encounter some issues, such as the display not showing the correct colors on some laptops with HDR.

Prerequisites

  • Windows 11 Build 25921 or higher
  • You should have an HDR display.
  • Ensure that your HDR display is connected to a device that supports HDR.
  • Download the HDR (JXR) wallpaper file.
  • Run the Windows HDR Calibration app for the best picture quality.

Note: If you have multiple monitors, Windows will automatically adjust the wallpaper according to HDR and SDR, depending on their capabilities.

How to Enable HDR on Your Display and Use HDR (JXR) Wallpaper on Windows 11

You must enable HDR on your display to apply HDR images as desktop backgrounds in Windows 11.

  • Open Windows Settings (Windows + I).
  • Go to System, then toggle to enable HDR under Brightness & Colour.
  • Once you enable HDR, you can apply desktop backgrounds in Windows 11.

How to Apply HDR Images as Desktop Backgrounds on Windows 11

Here is the desktop wallpaper with HDR images on Windows 11. Check out the following instructions mentioned below:

  • Open Windows Settings (Windows + I).
  • Head over to Personalisation, and then click on the Background page.
  • Click on the Picture option under “Personalise your background.”
  • Then, click Browse Photo to choose the HDR (JXR) wallpaper from File Explorer, and choose the Choose Picture button.
  • Now, click on Systems, and then click on the Display tab.

Microsoft has not clarified if this feature will be rolled out to everyone on Windows Insider Preview. However, HDR wallpaper on Windows 11 is available in v23H2 scheduled for Q4 2023.
