Reportedly, Samsung is considering making Microsoft’s Bing the default search engine for its Galaxy smartphones and tablets instead of Google. Google should be worried about this. The company has a deal with Samsung to be the default search engine on Samsung devices, but there are some reasons why Samsung wants to switch to Microsoft Bing. We saw recently that Samsung was looking to diversify its revenue streams.
Also, the Microsoft Bing Search Engine is currently one of the world’s most advanced AI-powered search engines, for which Microsoft has invested heavily in AI. In theory, Samsung may profit more from Microsoft if they switch to Bing as their default search engine. It’s worth noting that Google is a mighty company with many resources, so it won’t give up its position as default without a fight.
Samsung controls the Android experience.
We have seen how much they affect the Android and Windows ecosystems. Google has made several permissions and features available, like customizing Google Messages for OneUI, using Google Meet to co-watch YouTube videos, and other similar features. Also, Microsoft now allows apps to run directly from Samsung smartphones with Phone Link, OneDrive for Galaxy phone backup, and many other preinstalled Microsoft apps, Xbox controls support, and more. Even though Meta’s WhatsApp allows transferring the WhatsApp app to Samsung phones from any device, including the Apple iPhone, this has never been done before. So yeah, Samsung is one of the critical players in building the ecosystem and generating revenue from these devices.
Google isn’t happy about losing Samsung as a partner. The search giant Google is already in talks with Samsung to extend their contract, but the agreement is still unknown. Samsung is one of the biggest Android smartphone manufacturers in the world, and if Google loses it, it will hit Google significantly on the bottom line. Google generates billions of dollars as the default search engine for Samsung. If Samsung makes this decision, it will substantially increase the competition in the search market as most people will continue using Bing.
Google went into “Panic Mode” after “Red Alert” due to Samsung.
This news surfaced after The New York Times obtained Google’s internal communication, where Google expressed concern about losing its partnership with Samsung. This will impact Google a lot, especially since Google has been the dominant player in the search engine market for years. The company is already going through a red alert because of Microsoft’s AI-powered Bing and other rivals, and Samsung is looking to make Bing a more attractive option for Samsung devices, which can provide users with a more personalized and relevant experience.
Google is also working on a version of its search engine that uses an AI-powered tool called Bard. This panic mode will likely push Google to build its AI version to be more pleasing to users and a great alternative to Microsoft’s Bing. Microsoft isn’t the only company that has invested in AI; other search engines like Google, Baidu, and Yahoo are also working to improve their search engine capabilities, which is good to have in the competition.
Google is working on MAGI and GIFI.
After the threat of OpenAI’s ChatBOT and ChatGPT-powered Bing, which not only allows the generation of text based on natural language but can also perform certain actions like creating content, Bing threatens Google’s dominance. Google has released Bard, but it’s limited to specific regions. Since Bing is improving daily, Google is also working on other AI projects like GIFI and MAGI, which are natural language processing (NLP) models.
Like Bard, MAGI and GIFI are still in the early stages of development. However, if Google succeeds, it could maintain its dominance in the search engine market and become a leader in AI. Let’s talk about MAGI first. It is designed to give users a more personalized and relevant search engine, as they do with their search, by ranking websites according to user preferences and understanding their needs and preferences.
MAGI will learn about user interests and performance, which it will use to perform AI processes to understand your search context and queries to give users the most relevant search results. When it comes to GIFI, it is expected to generate images based on your prompt, like OpenAI DALL-E. It will improve the accuracy of search results over time, as Sundar Pichai hinted in a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal. It could debut this year at the Google I/O Developer conference on May 10, where they are expected to add one million more US users to their beta testing, which will expand to 30 million users by the end of 2023.
Google is also working on Searchalong and Tivoli Tutor.
Besides MAGI and GIFI, Searchalong will be integrated into Google, showing context-aware browsing assistance housed in a Chrome extension. This could appear next to the general search in Google’s traditional search. The Tivoli Turbo could benefit students of all ages more, allowing them to learn faster and more effectively.
The new MAGI will also be integrated into Chrome, just like how Microsoft has added the Bing Chatbot to their Microsoft Bing. Similarly, the new MAGI will work on Chrome, allowing users to search creatively and generate images with the given prompt. Google is expected to generate $3 billion in search revenue.
With the contract for being the preferred search engine status on Samsung, Google generated more than $145 billion last year, which was contributed by Apple and Samsung for being the preferred search engine. Google is trying to retain existing partners and expand to other Android makers. Google will likely invest in its AI tools to stay ahead of Bing.
Google is working on several new features and initiatives to stay ahead of the competition, like Microsoft Bing, You, and DuckDuckGo. The company is also working on new AI-powered tools to expand its search advertising business, as it is aware of the challenges it will face and has to address them. Microsoft is also clearly investing in AI, and the race to develop powerful AI will be more intense in the coming year. Apple has been using Bing as a default search engine, but Google signed a contract with Apple in 2017 for over $20 billion a year. According to reports, more than 160 engineers, designers, executives, and other staff are working on Project MAGI.
It’s too early to confirm, but Samsung hasn’t decided yet. Samsung will most likely retain its partnership with the company. Google is still a dominant search engine in the market, with a strong brand and loyal user base, making it unlikely that it will switch to Bing. It is doubtful that Google will lose its dominance overnight.
