If you have been encountering slow apps and facing unresponsiveness, then you may have exhausted your available RAM. It doesn’t always mean you need to update your memory. Instead, it’s better if you check and know which apps are taking your resources.

Checking the memory usage of an application in Windows 11

For this, there are two primary ways: task manager and resource monitor. It’s quite straightforward to check which app has been using the most memory on Windows 11. Follow the instructions mentioned below.

Check app memory usage on Windows 11 using Task Manager.

  • Open Task Manager (shortcut key: CTRL + Shift + ESC)
  • After that, click on the memory header and then sort the applications by memory usage.
  • Now, it will show the app with high memory usage.

Note: If you want to end that task, you can right-click on the app and then click on End Task. However, this will force you to quit the app, and your data will not be saved.

Check app memory usage on Windows 11 using Resource Monitor.

  • Open the Windows Run Dialog box (shortcut: WIN + R).
  • Type “resmon.exe,” and then it will open Resource Monitor.
  • Click on Private (KB) and then sort the applications by memory usage.

Note: You may find it difficult, unlike Task Manager. For example, Microsoft Edge will be listed as msedge.exe. You can search for the program online to find the app name. You can also force quit the app by clicking on it and then selecting End Process. This will terminate all related processes in the app without saving the file you have been working on.

So this is how you can check which app is using what amount of memory. And if you have been facing issues, you can also end the process in case the app gets stuck. You can also restart or reboot your computer, which will recompile the app and could potentially fix resource issues.

However, some apps, like games, video editing, and photo editing, take a lot of resources. So if you have been working on something that takes a lot of resources, then you need to upgrade your system according to your preferences and requirements.
